Indefinite Leave To Remain

  • • Persons who have held the same type of British visa for 5 years or more may be eligible to apply for ILR, although in some cases this time frame ranges between 3 to 10 years. Indefinite Leave to Remain represents a transition that goes through British Citizenship or Naturalisation and it enables migrants to stay in the UK without any restrictions imposed.
  • • Almost all British visa routes can pave the way through ILR after fulfilling certain other requirements. These routes include, but are not limited to, the following; Spouse visa, unmarried partner visa, family visa, long-term work visa, skilled worker visa, UK ancestry visa, innovator visa, global talent visa and investor visa.

The conditions that you need to meet to qualify for ILR are as follows:

  • • Having been in the UK on the same type of British Visa for 5 years or more
  • • Proving that you passed the B1 Level of English test
  • • Passing the Life in the UK Test
  • • Having no criminal record
  • • Have not breached the immigration laws during your UK stay
  • • Having to not spend more than 180 days, in a year while you were in the UK, outside of the UK

How long is indefinite leave to remain valid?

Indefinite Leave to Remain, as can be understood from its name, has no expiry date or time limit. However, in some cases, such as being outside of the UK for more than two years or being deported following a conviction, it may be lost.
