CAN FIANCÉ(E) VISA HOLDERS WORK IN THE UK?
No. Fiancé(e) Visa holders are not permitted to work in the UK until they switch to a Spouse Visa after marriage.
However, they can:
• Prepare for their wedding
• Live with their partner in the UK
• Study (in limited circumstances)
WHAT IS A FIANCÉ(E) VISA?
The UK Fiancé(e) Visa allows individuals to enter the UK to marry their British or settled partner.
You must marry within 6 months of arrival. After the marriage, you must apply to switch to a Spouse Visa to continue living in the UK.
The sponsoring partner must be:
• A British or Irish citizen
• A person with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or settled status
• A person with refugee status or humanitarian protection
FIANCÉ(E) VISA REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for a Fiancé(e) Visa, you must demonstrate:
- Both partners are aged 18 or over
• You have met each other in person
• Your relationship is genuine and ongoing
• You intend to marry within 6 months
• You intend to live together permanently after marriage
• Any previous relationships have ended
• You meet the financial requirement (minimum £29,000 annual income)
• You have suitable accommodation in the UK
• You meet the English language requirement (minimum A1 level)
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENT (UPDATED)
The current financial requirement is:
• £29,000 gross annual income
Important notes:
• This threshold does not increase with children
• Savings can be used as an alternative or alongside income
• Certain applicants may be exempt if specific benefits are received
VISA DURATION AND CONDITIONS
- The Fiancé(e) Visa is granted for 6 months only
• You must marry within this period
During this visa:
• You cannot work
• You cannot access public funds
• You must switch to a Spouse Visa after marriage
CAN THE FIANCÉ(E) VISA BE EXTENDED?
No. The Fiancé(e) Visa cannot be extended.
If you do not marry within 6 months, you must leave the UK or make a different application if eligible.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MARRIAGE?
After getting married, you must apply for a Spouse Visa (inside the UK).
Once switched:
• You will gain full right to work
• You can stay for 30 months
• You can start your route towards ILR
DOES A FIANCÉ(E) VISA LEAD TO ILR OR CITIZENSHIP?
Not directly. The Fiancé(e) Visa itself does not count towards ILR.
However:
• After switching to a Spouse Visa
• And completing 5 years on the partner route
You may apply for:
• Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
• Then British citizenship after 12 months
