British Citizenship
British naturalisation is the legal process through which a person who is not British by birth can become a British citizen.
WHAT DOES BRITISH NATURALISATION MEAN?
British naturalisation is the legal process through which a person who is not British by birth can become a British citizen.
Once granted, you will have the same rights and privileges as any British citizen, including the ability to apply for a UK passport, live and work in the UK without restrictions, and access public funds where eligible.
Naturalisation is typically available to individuals who have already obtained Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or settled status.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN REQUIREMENTS FOR NATURALISATION?
To apply for British citizenship by naturalisation, you must generally meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or settled status for at least 12 months (unless married to a British citizen)
- Meet the residence requirements, including:
- Not spending more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months
- Meeting the overall lawful residence requirements (typically 5 years, or 3 years if married to a British citizen)
- Demonstrate good character, including a clean immigration and criminal record
- Pass the Life in the UK Test
- Meet the English language requirement (unless exempt)
- Intend to continue living in the UK
SPECIAL CASE: MARRIED TO A BRITISH CITIZEN
If you are married to a British citizen and hold ILR or settled status, you may apply for naturalisation immediately, without waiting 12 months after obtaining ILR.
CHILDREN’S APPLICATIONS
Children under 18 do not apply for naturalisation in the same way as adults but may be registered as British citizens, subject to eligibility.
Generally, children may qualify if:
- They have lived in the UK for a qualifying period (usually 3 years)
- At least one parent is a British citizen or settled in the UK

- Vote in UK elections and participate fully in civic life
- Travel freely in and out of the UK without visa restrictions
- Access consular protection abroad
