US B1/B2 Visa

The U.S. Visitor Visa (B1/B2) is a non-immigrant visa designed for individuals who wish to visit the United States on a temporary basis. This visa allows you to travel to the U.S. for short-term purposes.

The U.S. Visitor Visa (B1/B2) is a non-immigrant visa designed for individuals who wish to visit the United States on a temporary basis. Whether you are planning a holiday, visiting family, attending business meetings, or seeking medical treatment, this visa allows you to travel to the U.S. for short-term purposes.

What is a B1/B2 Visa?

The B1/B2 visa combines two categories:

B-2 (Tourism & Personal Visits)
For individuals travelling for:
• Holidays and tourism
• Visiting family or friends
• Medical treatment
• Social events such as weddings or graduations
• Short recreational courses (non-academic)

B-1 (Business Visits)
For individuals travelling for:
• Business meetings and negotiations
• Conferences, seminars, and events
• Consulting with business partners
• Short-term, unpaid business activities

Most applicants are issued a combined B1/B2 visa, allowing flexibility for both purposes.

How Long Can You Stay?

In most cases, visitors may stay in the United States for up to 6 months per visit. However, the exact duration is determined by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer upon arrival.

It is important to understand:
• Your visa validity is not the same as your permitted stay
• Each entry is assessed individually
• Shorter stays may be granted depending on your circumstances

Extensions may be possible, but they are discretionary and subject to strict assessment.

What You Cannot Do on a Visitor Visa

While the B1/B2 visa is flexible, there are strict limitations. You cannot:
• Work or receive payment from a U.S. source
• Engage in long-term or ongoing employment
• Study full-time
• Use the visa to live in the U.S. through frequent or extended visits
• Provide services to U.S.-based companies

Eligibility Requirements

To be approved, you must demonstrate that:

  • You have a genuine and temporary reason for your visit
    • You have strong ties to your home country (employment, family, financial commitments)
    • You have sufficient funds to support your stay
    • You fully intend to leave the U.S. at the end of your visit

U.S. visa officers place significant emphasis on your intent and overall credibility, not just documentation.

Visa Validity

B1/B2 visas may be issued for 1, 5, or 10 years, depending on your nationality and individual assessment.

Important:
The visa validity period only allows you to travel to the U.S.—it does not determine how long you can stay.
