WHAT IS THE UK EXPANSION WORKER VISA?
The UK Expansion Worker Visa is part of the Global Business Mobility routes and allows senior managers or specialist employees of an overseas business to come to the UK to establish a branch or subsidiary that has not yet started trading.
This route is specifically designed for overseas businesses looking to expand into the UK market. Before assigning a Certificate of Sponsorship, the UK entity must hold a valid Sponsor Licence.
The visa is usually granted for up to 12 months, with a maximum stay of 2 years. This route does not lead directly to settlement (ILR).
EXPANSION WORKER VISA REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be employed by an overseas business that is linked to the UK sponsor through common ownership or control
- Have worked for the overseas business for at least 12 months, unless:
- Earning £73,900 or more, or
- Covered by specific exemptions (e.g. certain Japanese business provisions)
- Hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) issued by an authorised sponsor
- Work in a role at RQF Level 6 or above (graduate level)
- Receive a salary of at least £48,500 per year or the “going rate” for the role (whichever is higher)
- Meet the financial maintenance requirement (unless certified by the sponsor)
- No English language requirement applies
CAN I BRING MY FAMILY TO THE UK?
Yes, your partner and children can apply as dependants.
Dependants include:
- Spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner (must have lived together for at least 2 years)
- Children under 18
- Children over 18 if already in the UK as your dependant
CAN I SWITCH TO AN EXPANSION WORKER VISA?
You may be able to switch from within the UK, depending on your current visa type.
However:
- You cannot switch from certain visas, including the Visitor Visa
- You should not travel outside the UK while your application is pending, as it may be treated as withdrawn
